Guest (Substitute) Teachers

The District relies on qualified and enthusiastic Guest (substitute) Teachers to maintain an instructional atmosphere in each classroom while their teacher is out. Providing a learning environment each day is a critical component in the success of our children's education.

DPS guest teachers are compensated at a daily rate of $95.84 (half-day $47.92).  Guest Teachers that work regularly are rewarded by becoming a super sub and compensated at a daily rate of $144.64 (half-day $72.32).  Retired teachers from any school district are compensated at a daily rate of $112.72 (half-day $56.36). Denver Public Schools offers professional development training for substitutes with a 3-year license on classroom management prior to entering the classroom. Please review the following licensure and hiring process for DPS Guest Teachers:

  1. Teaching License or Substitute Authorization - To work as a DPS guest teacher, you must possess a Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Teaching License, 5-Year Substitute Authorization, or 3-Year Substitute Authorization. In order to obtain a substitute authorization you must have at least a Bachelors Degree. At the time of your interview, you will be asked to provide your teaching credentials or a dated receipt from CDE verifying you have submitted your application for a Teacher License or Substitute Authorization. Visit the Colorado Department of Education website to inquire about how to obtain a Teaching License or Substitute Authorization.
  2. Work Area - The district has five geographic areas. Selecting a specific area of work can minimize your travel expenses and assist you with building relationships with the schools.
  3. Online Application - Once DPS resumes hiring guest teachers, postings will be on the Job Board. The job posting will indicate which work area we are hiring.
  4. Work References - You must have at least two past supervisors complete and return a business reference by the time of your interview. This form will be emailed to you when we invite you to the interview.
  5. Interview - If chosen to interview, HR will email you to schedule an interview. Due to the high volume of applications, we will not be able to interview all applicants.
